From the beginning, Naples was destined to be a boater's paradise. Proximity to the Gulf of Mexico and the lure of open waters have always been primary reasons visitors flocked to the area, which has been transformed from a rustic resort town into an internationally-renowned destination. The sun, sand, balmy weather and boating opportunites that attract visitors and residents today are the same that prompted Naples yacht Club's founding members to establish the area's first private boating and social organization.
Original Founders of the Naples Yacht Club:
Founded in 1947, two years prior to Naples officially becoming a city, Naples Yacht Club has the distinction of being the city's first private club. With a population of approximately 1,400 residents and limited to commercial activity, Naples was not the cosmopolitan and cultural center it is today. Fortunately, founding members Stephen Briggs, Benjamin Morris and Glen Sample could envision what Naples was to become and foresee the need to for a private yacht club.
In 1953, the Club's membership increased beyond the three founding members to more than 20 members. Evolving from informal meetings held aboard the Mangrove King (pictured below), an unusual-looking vessel owned by Mr. Morris, the Club's first recorded meeting was held March 19, 1954. It was decided to establish a permanent location for a clubhouse and dock. Land acquisition at the current site on Naples Bay necessitated the Club's incorporation in 1956, followed by the commencement of construction in January 1960 of a clubhouse and dock for the now 200 members. The Club's constuction was finished the first week of September, 1960. Within a few days, Hurricane Donna struck Naples with winds of 180 miles per hour! Minor damage to the new clubhouse's roof was repaired and the Club was formally dedicated on December 15, 1960. As Naples continued to grow, so did the Club's membership, prompting several expansions and renovations, including a new floating dock system, pool, casual dining room and other amenities.

The Club has grown from its three founding yachtsmen to over 600 in 2010. Built upon tradition and camaraderie, Naples Yacht Club continues to be an integral community partner and one of the nation's premier yacht clubs.
